SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – With midterm elections right around the corner, some Republicans have begun to separate themselves from former President Donald Trump, with one congressman saying he's "lost his mind."
Republican Rep. Chris Jacobs of New York shared with The Buffalo News that he believes the Republican party needs a "new generation of leadership" in 2024.
"I just think his judgment from Election Day to January 6 was — I just think [Trump] lost his mind," Jacobs said in the interview. "I really do. I just do."
What makes the comments from Jacobs even more shocking is that he was one of the 147 congressional Republicans who voted against certifying some states' 2020 election results.
However, Jacobs did make his intentions clear when he voted in favor of establishing the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack at the U.S. Capitol.
Jacobs announced that he would not run for reelection when his term ends, and now that he no longer will need GOP primary votes, he is joining others in speaking out against Trump.
Several other Republicans and high-profile personalities have called out the former president, most notably Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who is the vice chair on the House select committee.
During the public hearings held by the committee, Cheney has not held back when attacking the actions and inactions of Trump, as well as when she speaks about the committee's work at different events.
"As the full picture is coming into view with the Jan. 6 committee, it has become clear that the efforts Donald Trump oversaw and engaged in were even more chilling and more threatening than we could have imagined," Cheney said at an event she spoke at last month.
Others to take aim at Trump include controversial podcaster Joe Rogan who called Trump a "man-baby" on his recent episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience."
The comment was made while speaking with his guest, comedian and fellow podcaster, Tom Segura. Segura was discussing a story he had heard about how the people around Trump kept him engaged while he was in office.
"[Jared Kushner], his son-in-law, said he came up with a formula to keep him engaged … the formula was 'two good, one bad,'" Segura said. "So if they were going to give him some bad news, you'd start with some good news. So they go, 'This is going well, everybody's thrilled with you about this, here's a bad thing. Also, people love you for this.'"
"Of course, he's a man baby," Rogan responded, laughing, while Segura called him a "toddler."
The dissent among those who once praised, or somewhat supported, Trump continues to grow, and because of this, Jacobs shared with the Buffalo News he thinks it would be "best for the party if we embrace the new generation of leadership."
Jacobs continued saying that he feels many of the things Trump was able to accomplish in office were "undone" by his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
