Liam and Olivia may be the most popular baby names in the U.S. for the fifth year in a row -- but one name rising in popularity is aiming to shake things up a bit.
Every year, Social Security celebrates Mother’s Day by announcing the 1,000 most popular baby names from the previous year. Continuing their dominance atop the chart where they've been for the last half-decade, Liam and Olivia once again led the pack in 2023.
Olivia has been in the top 10 since 2001, rising to and remaining at the number one spot since 2019. Liam hasn't spent quite as much time in the top 10, breaking through in 2012, but his reign at the top as been longer, holding down the number one spot since 2017.
But there's a new name in town that's getting hotter and could ultimately break Liam's stronghold on the list. Mateo appeared in the top 10 for the first time in 2023 and he did it making a splash, landing at number six -- up five spots from 2022's ranking. On top of that, Mateo was the only new name, boy or girl, to appear on the list in 2023.

Social Security also highlighted the fastest rising names for boys and girls in 2023, although they lack the popularity to even stand in the shadow of the top 10 names.
Kaeli is the fastest rising girl's name -- jumping a whopping 1,692 spots from 2,370 in 2022 to 678 last year -- and Izael is the boy's fastest riser -- jumping 860 spots from 1,666 in 2022 to 806 last year.
