For years, a 17-second song clip was floating around the internet, puzzling music fans. People loved it, but they had no idea where it was from. This year, they finally found out.

“It’s quite interesting because it has an 80s vibe to it,” explained Laura Holliday, a writer who specializes in internet culture. “It sounds like it could be a hit song, so it sounds like it would fit in with, you know, Madonna or, you know, Cyndi Lauper.”

Holliday joined host Mike Rogers on the “Something Offbeat” podcast to talk about the mystery and how it was finally solved.

She explained that it was initially uploaded to a site called WatZatSong.com by a user named Carl92 in 2021. From there, it earned its own subreddit, and internet sleuths eventually tracked its somewhat risqué origins.

As it turns out, “Everyone Knows That (Ulterior Motives)” came from a 1986 film intended only for adult audiences. Listen here to find out how the truth was revealed.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
