Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) took his battle against Dr. Anthony Fauci up another notch by writing an op-ed for Fox News Monday, proposing an amendment to remove the famed doctor as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Paul opened the article by saying the COVID-19 mandates and state lockdowns "were based on junk science," and went on to call those in charge of social distancing guidelines "petty tyrants."
"The toll of COVID doesn’t stop there," Sen. Paul wrote. "We lost more than individuals. We lost our freedoms. Our liberties. Our vibrant small town Main Streets. Our children’s growth and learning. For two years our lives were held captive by petty tyrants and power-hungry bureaucrats.
Sen. Paul went on to say that the most important lesson over the last two years of the pandemic is that one person shouldn't be in charge of making decisions for a country.
"We've learned a lot over the past two years, but one lesson in particular is that no one person should be deemed 'dictator in chief.' No one person should have unilateral authority to make decisions for millions of Americans.
He then outlined his proposal to remove Dr. Fauci -- someone he's warred with publicly on numerous occasions -- as director of NIAID.
"To ensure that ineffective, unscientific lockdowns and mandates are never foisted on the American people ever again, I will introduce an amendment to eliminate Dr. Anthony Fauci’s position as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and divide his power into three separate new institutes."
Sen. Paul continued to criticize Dr. Fauci for how he handled the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that a person who was not elected for their position should not hold as much power and influence as he did.
Dr. Fauci has been the director of NIAID since 1984, and has been a top advisor to every U.S. president since Ronald Reagan.
Sen. Paul then discussed how the pandemic has affected the education of children across the country. He said that virtual learning, masks, vaccines, and a lack of social activities have caused mental health issues for children, citing CDC statistics for emergency hospital visits.
"But it wasn't just lockdowns that affected kids," Sen. Paul wrote. "It was also the notion that they MUST wear a mask for eight hours a day that also created psychological issues and inhibited communication between students and teachers.
"Keeping kids out of school clearly did far more harm than good. And the same can be said for masks."
Sen. Paul finished his op-ed by saying Dr. Fauci's mistakes throughout the pandemic, including telling "the public that cloth masks work," are deserving for him to be removed from his position.
"I've been a physician for over 33 years," Sen. Paul wrote. "In all my years studying and practicing medicine, I had never encountered someone with the gall to proclaim himself "the science" and portray anyone opposing him as "attacking science." That is, until Dr. Fauci became the COVID dictator-in-chief."
"The biggest lesson we have learned over the last two years is that no one person should have this much unchecked power. And my amendment, which will get a vote this week, will finally force accountability and fire Dr. Fauci."
