The House convened on Wednesday to vote on the latest Republican nominee for the Speaker of the House, Louisiana GOP Rep. Mike Johnson.

Johnson received the necessary votes to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Late on Tuesday, Johnson became the fourth Republican to earn the Speaker nominee, following the short-lived run of Minnesota Republican Tom Emmer.

Emmer was selected on Tuesday and then quickly abandoned the nominee, partly due to former President Donald Trump, who refused to support the Minnesotan.

The top spot in the House has now been vacant for more than three weeks following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

McCarthy commented on the vote on the way to the House floor, saying Johnson was the man for the job.

"He's great. He's got a lot of leadership experience. He's going to be fabulous," McCarthy said.

Ahead of the vote, it remained unclear whether or not Johnson would win the position as Republicans continued to battle amongst themselves on who to select as McCarthy’s replacement.

Johnson served as the vice chair of the House Republican Conference and has maintained a low profile in the House compared to the other GOP Speaker nominations.
