Rumors swirled on Sunday after reports came out that former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis met for several hours in Miami on Sunday.
The meeting was first reported by The Washington Post but has since been confirmed by other outlets, including CNN and NBC News.
The meeting between the two was the first time they’ve gotten together since DeSantis dropped out of the GOP primary in January. Citing a source, CNN reported that the meeting was set up by Trump’s longtime friend, Steve Witkoff, at the request of DeSantis.
DeSantis was playing golf at the Shell Bay Club and agreed to meet and have breakfast with the former president, the reports said.
After failing to build a strong enough base to dethrone Trump from the top of the GOP, DeSantis endorsed the former president in the Republican primary, however, he has not campaigned with him since.
Still, CNN and NBC News reported that he is expected to help fundraise for Trump in the coming weeks.
According to NBC News, the meeting was described by those familiar as “nice” and “friendly.” The report also said that DeSantis wanted the meeting as a means to “bury the hatchet” with Trump, who notably used a flurry of unflattering nicknames to describe him when both were in the race, including 'Meatball Ron,' 'DeSanctimonious' and 'Little D.'
As for the two potentially teaming up on one presidential ticket, neither camp has made it clear if that was the motive, and remarks from DeSantis earlier this year seemed to have ruled out the possibility.
“I don’t want to be VP. I don’t want to be in the Cabinet. I don’t want a TV show,” DeSantis said in January before he dropped out. “I’m in it to win it.”
