Did you shop at Walmart at all from Oct. 19, 2018 to Jan. 19 of this year? If you were a Walmart customer during that time, did you ever buy weighted goods or bagged citrus?
People who said “yes” to those questions might be able to get cash as part of a $45 million settlement, according to the settlement website.
Some people who may be entitled to payments have already received notices. According to Verify, a fact-checking outlet, multiple readers reached out after receiving these notices via email. The outlet was able to verify that the settlement is real. It was also reported by USA Today.
According to the settlement website, products covered in the settlement include packaged meat, poultry, pork, and seafood as well as bagged organic oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and navel oranges sold in bulk. In the Kukorinis v. Walmart case, the plaintiff alleged that customers were charged more than lowest in-store advertised price.
“Neither the Court nor a jury have considered or decided the merits of the allegations in the lawsuit,” the site clarified. “The parties have negotiated and entered into the proposed Settlement to avoid the risk, uncertain outcome, and expense of continued litigation.”
Walmart denies any wrongdoing.
Claimants with no proof of purchase may get $10 to $25. Those who do have proof of purchase may be entitled to receive 2% of the total cost of the substantiated purchases up to $500.
If people who believe they are claimants wish to file their own suit against Walmart, they can exclude themselves from the settlement by May 22. Those with objections or comments must also submit them by that date.
In order to get a payment from the settlement, claimants must submit their claims by June 5. Claim forms can be submitted online at this website.
People with questions regarding the settlement are advised not to contact the court clerk’s office. Instead, they can call the claims administrator at 1-833-987-9998.
A final approval hearing will be held on June 12. However, appeals may delay the conclusion of the case and it may take several months for claims to be processed. Claimants would receive payments electronically or via paper check if they submit a request for one. They can visit the settlement website for updates.
