A recent study has arrived just in time for the day of love, ranking the top 10 best and worst cities in America when it comes to dating.
The study, completed by Bestplaces.net, used several factors when finding the best city in the country for dating. This included the number of singles in the city ages 18-24, population density, and dating venues per capita.
The study looked at 80 different metro areas in the country to find the “D.C. (Dating Capital) of the U.S.”
Earning the title of the country’s true D.C. was Austin, Texas, which the study said scored high in every category, from the frequency of dating partners to the number of places people can potentially meet.
On top of that, the study also said that Austin is extremely young, with the highest percentage of 18-24-year-olds calling the city home. Austin was also found to have the residents with the “highest expenditures on alcohol purchased away from home.”
Rounding out the top 10 was Colorado Springs, Colorado; San Diego, California; Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina; Seattle, Washington; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Springfield, Massachusetts; and Honolulu, Hawaii.
“Large cities that everyone associates with socializing, like Los Angeles and Miami, did not rank particularly high, scoring lower in categories like coffee shops per capita and flowers bought as gifts,” Bert Sperling, president of Sperling’s BestPlaces, shared in the study.
“But cities like Austin (No. 1), Colorado Springs (No. 2) and Ann Arbor (No. 8) were not a complete surprise – they are heavy-populated college towns, and it’s easy for young singles to get together.”
There are several unique reasons some other cities earned their top spots in the study, like San Diego having a high diversity index, which the study says increases the “likelihood of randomly meeting someone of a different race or ethnicity.”
The study also shared that Seattle has a large number of coffee shops; Charleston ranks second in the number of lingerie shops per capita; and Norfolk was said to have an “exceptional amount of flowers that were brought as gifts for a special someone.”
While love may be in the air for the top 10 cities, the study also ranked the bottom 10 using the same factors.
Despite them being the Super Bowl champions, coming in at the worst city for dating in the country is Kansas City, Missouri.
The other nine worst cities ranked by the study include Wichita, Kansas; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota; Detroit, Michigan; Louisville, Kentucky; Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Houston, Texas; and Charlotte, North Carolina.
While it may be a hard pill to swallow for the 10 worst cities to date, Sperling shared in the study that researchers reached out to singles in each of the cities and found their findings to be accurate.
“In these cities, there are relatively few young singles and the towns are so spread out, it can be difficult for them to find each other,” Sperling shared. “Some are using this study as a call to action to provide places where people can hang out and get together.”
