Jenna Ellis, a lawyer and media personality who previously served as senior legal advisor and personal counsel to former President Donald Trump, was one of the 18 people indicted alongside him this week.
Now, Ellis’ own legal team has set up a donation page on a Christian fundraising website for her legal fees. As of Wednesday afternoon, she had raised $13,904.
“This is the OFFICIAL crowdfunding support page for Jenna Ellis, created by her legal team,” said the page. It also said she “is being targeted and the government is trying to criminalize the practice of law.”
Per the indictment filed Monday by Fulton Cunty District Attorney Fani Willis in Georgia, defendants allegedly “unlawfully conspired and endeavored to conduct and participate in criminal enterprise in Fulton County, Georgia, and elsewhere,” through their efforts related to the 2020 presidential election.
Trump lost that election to current President Joe Biden.
Ellis is accused of a number of specific things in the indictment. These include: making false statements at a press conference; soliciting, requesting and importuning Pennsylvania, Arizona and Michigan legislators to unlawfully appoint presidential electors and the felony offense of solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer in Georgia.
Additionally, the indictment alleges that Ellis wrote memorandums that “outlined strategy for disrupting and delaying the joint session of Congress on January 6, 2021, the day prescribed by law for counting votes cast by the duly elected and qualified presidential electors from Georgia and the other states.”
This allegation is a reference to the deadly Capitol riot. She allegedly said in one memo that “the Vice President should therefore not open any of the votes,” from six states (including Georgia) falsely identified as having disputed electoral delegates. Around one day before the riot, Ellis allegedly wrote in a memo that “the Vice President should begin alphabetically in order of the states, and coming first to Arizona, not open the purported certification, but simply stop the count at that juncture.”
Ellis was also censured earlier this year for making false statements related to the 2020 election, per CBS News.
According to Newsweek, some reports claim that Ellis is seeking donations for her legal fees because Trump is refusing to help her. This is reportedly because she has voiced support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign.
“Just found out from very solid sources that Trump’s PAC won’t assist [Ellis] with one penny of legal fees because she has been complimentary and supportive of DeSantis,” said an X post from former media host John Cardillo cited by Newsweek.
While Trump is in the lead of the group of GOP presidential hopefuls at the polls, DeSantis often comes in a distant second. It does appear that Ellis is a fan of the governor, based on her X posts. This Tuesday, she shared a Conservative Brief article about Iowa talk show host Steve Deace backing DeSantis.
“The right choice and with excellent rationale!” she said in the post.
However, Newsweek said it “has been unable to independently verify the reports,” and that Ellis hasn’t mentioned being financially cut off by Trump due to her support for DeSantis.
“The Democrats and the Fulton County DA are criminalizing the practice of law. I am resolved to trust the Lord and I will simply continue to honor, praise, and serve Him,” Ellis – who describes herself as “A servant of Jesus Christ” – said in an X post. “I deeply appreciate all of my friends who have reached out offering encouragement and support.”
