NEW YORK (WBEN) — Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo would have booted then-Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul from his ticket if he had remained in his position and run for reelection in 2022, according to a new report.
Prior to Cuomo's resignation, his top aides told Hochul she would not be his running mate in the 2022 election, the New York Post reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Cuomo hoped to replace Hochul with a politician who could draw more progressive voters, the outlet reported.
"It was like their mindset in 2018, they were thinking, 'We have progressive issues. We need someone downstate who has a relationship with the minority community, but who cares,'" one source told the outlet.
"There was no relationship [between Cuomo and Hochul]," the source added.
Another source, described as a "former Cuomo insider," told the Post there was "a concerted effort to sideline [Hochul] as much as possible."
