NEW YORK (WBEN) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s mother and sister voiced their support for the embattled politician in an interview on Monday, with his sister saying the family was “all rallied around him.”
In a phone interview with the Times Union in Albany on Monday, Cuomo’s 89-year-old mother, Matilda Cuomo, said she has “always had the utmost admiration for Andrew, and I still do.”
“He is my son, and I don’t like what he is going through,” she told the outlet.
The Cuomo family, his sister Maria Cuomo Cole added, is “all rallied around him,” despite calls by a number of New York lawmakers for the governor’s resignation.
“I wouldn’t say it’s been traumatic on us, but it’s been disappointing to see that he wouldn’t receive the support of some elected officials who know his abilities so well,” Cuomo Cole said. “But that’s politics, to a large extent.”
“I tell Andrew to continue doing his job as governor,” Matilda Cuomo added. “Because he is a problem-solver who gets things done for the people of New York.”
Several women, including three former staffers, have accused Cuomo of sexual harassment. The governor is also facing a probe into his administration's handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes.
Cuomo last week said he was “truly sorry” if anything he had said in the past was “misinterpreted as unwanted flirtation,” but denied “inappropriately” touching anyone.
