Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - "The world community is standing against Russia today," said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York during a Buffalo visit Thursday and responding to questions about the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Gillibrand joins a chorus of political leaders who are voicing outrage against the attack and stand in unified support of the Ukrainian people and government.

Gillibrand is supportive of the strict sanctions placed on Russia by the U.S. and NATO and believes they will ultimately bring Russia to its knees. "They will become crippling sanctions if Russia continues to persist in moving troops into Kyiv and other areas of Ukraine."

Rep. Brian Higgins of Buffalo is also standing in support of Ukraine following the Russian attack. "Over 30 years ago, the Ukrainian people chose democracy over tyranny when they declared independence from the Soviet Union and established their own government," stated Higgins. "The U.S. and the world must stand united with the people of Ukraine."

Rep. Chris Jacobs of Buffalo said, "Vladimir Putin's unprovoked and deadly full-scale invasion against a sovereign nation is reprehensible and must be met with severe consequences."

"We have in New York State one of the largest Ukrainian populations outside the country," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul in remarks on the crisis. "We are on heightened alert with respect to cybersecurity," said Hochul.
