Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - In what is being touted by his office as a 'major announcement', Rep. Brian Higgins will be at the Buffalo History Museum Sunday morning and will likely set the wheels in motion for what will be a political game of musical chairs.
WBEN reported this week that Higgins is expected to resign his seat in Congress, as early as this week, and accept the post as the top executive at Shea's Buffalo Theatre.
Higgins' expected departure from Congress will trigger a flurry of political maneuvering with leading candidates expected to raise their hands to be considered for the post.
A resignation before the end of Higgins' current term would lead to a special election being called by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
WBEN has learned New York State Sen. Tim Kennedy is the frontrunner for the seat, however Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown issued a statement Friday acknowledging interest and that he would discuss it at "the appropriate time".
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz is another possible candidate, however, Poloncarz just won re-election to his post and expressed an intention to serve out a final term in office.
