While admitting he is not entirely familiar with the April 1 incident at Buffalo Public School 197, Mayor Sean Ryan says it does serve as yet another example of too many guns, too easily obtained that are out on the street.

In the April 1 incident, a 17-year-old male - who is already facing felony guns, firearms and possession of controlled substances and was arrested in mid-March - was arrested by school security officers as he attempted to enter the school with an unloaded 9mm handgun.

The kicker is that the male was released on his recognizance after his mid-March arrest.

Following his April 1 arrest, the male was remanded to Erie County's youth detention center and is due back in court this afternoon.

"We have to be unyielding," Ryan said of efforts to seize illegal handguns and other firearms.

Ryan also blames neighboring states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio for being too liberal with gun sales, even allowing teenagers to buy firearms.

That was the case with Peyton Gendron, the Tops May 14th shooter, who bought his weapons in Pennsylvania.

"Why would any 17-year-old need a handgun," asked Sam Radford, Buffalo schools activist and East Side civic leader.

Both the mid-March and April 1 incidents remain under investigation.
