NEW YORK (WBEN) -- New York state reported over 10,000 new coronavirus cases for the fifth day in a row Sunday as hospitalizations continued to climb.

There were 10,194 more cases in the state Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Of those, 3,378 were in New York City.

New York has reported over 10,000 new cases every day since Tuesday, when 9,335 were reported.

The 10,194 new cases were out of 205,250 tests on Saturday, a statewide positivity rate of 4.96%. That's up slightly from a 4.58% positivity the day before.

Hospitalizations rose by 51 to 5,410, with 746 newly admitted patients and 619 discharges.

The number of patients in intensive care decreased by 20 to 1,009, while the number of intubated patients rose by four to 567.

Daily deaths surpassed 100, with 106 more people dying in the state. The death toll since the pandemic began is now 27,785.

In a statement, Cuomo said that contract tracing continues to show household and small gatherings are driving the increase in cases.

"The vaccine is coming and there is light at the end of this long tunnel, but we must remain vigilant until it is available widely," Cuomo said.

In Western New York, 26% of available hospital beds are unoccupied. Cuomo indicated Friday that any potential changes in cluster zones would occur Monday after a review of weekend data.
