NEW YORK (WBEN) – New York state is approaching a milestone in its vaccination effort as nearly a third of residents are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday that 31.1% of New Yorkers had completed a vaccine series.

At the current pace, the state could surpass a third of residents fully vaccinated this week. Last Sunday, 28.1% of residents were fully vaccinated.

Cuomo said 44.1% of New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, up from 41.4% last Sunday.

A total of 14,435,026 vaccine doses have been administered in the state since inoculations began.

There have been 139,416 vaccinations in the past day and 1,137,695 vaccinations in the past week.

New York resumed use of Johnson & Johnson's vaccine this weekend after U.S. health officials lifted a pause on it. And New York City began offering walk-in vaccinations to residents 16 years and older at all city-run sites on Friday.

In a statement, Cuomo said, "providers are working around the clock to get more shots into arms" and that "momentum is on our side."

"To keep our progress moving in the right direction, we have not only continued to expand access to the vaccine, but we are working hard every day to fight hesitancy as well," the governor said.

The state reported 4,087 new COVID-19 cases and 50 deaths on Sunday. Of those, 1,925 cases and 29 deaths were in New York City.

The statewide single-day positivity rate—which dropped below 2% on Saturday—was 1.88%. The seven-day positivity rate fell to 2.19%.

Hospitalizations also reached their lowest level in months, dropping by 96 patients to 3,198. That's the fewest patients since Nov. 28.
