Poll: New York voters feel Cuomo mishandled nursing homes during pandemic

NEW YORK (WBEN) — A new poll released Tuesday revealed some troubling numbers for Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

According to a new Marist College poll, around 61% of voters in New York State believe Gov. Cuomo did something wrong in his handling of nursing homes during the pandemic.

Around 41% say they believe the governor did something unethical and 19% say the think Gov. Cuomo broke the law.

So far, only 27% of registered voters in the state say that Cuomo did nothing wrong.

The poll came after a top aide for the governor revealed to lawmakers that the Cuomo administration "froze" in releasing data on COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes because they feared it would be "used against" them.

In January, the New York State attorney general's office also released a report claiming the Cuomo administration had undercounted COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes by as much as 50%.

The Cuomo administration has maintained their data has always been full and accurate.

Last week, the governor once again defended his administration's handling of the pandemic and blamed his political opponents for spreading falsehoods about nursing homes deaths.

Gov. Cuomo has said that he believes his administration did the best they could at the peak of the pandemic in New York State, but says he wishes he was "more aggressive in fighting the misinformation."

As far as his overall handling of the pandemic, the Marist poll found that 54% of New York voters still approve of the governor's action. However, that is down from the 72% that gave their approval in July 2020.
