NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WBEN) - A basketball player from the University at Buffalo is accused of stabbing a player from Canisius College during a pickup game at a church.

Police said Malik Zachery fled from the scene after the stabbing at St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 875 Eggert Drive on Thursday. Players from UB and Canisius were scrimmaging when there was a fight between the players. A player from Canisius was stabbed in the leg during the fight and was taken to the hospital.


Zachery was charged with second degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

He was held pending arraignment in North Tonawanda City Court.

"The University at Buffalo and its Division of Athletics are aware that North Tonawanda Police is investigating an alleged incident involving a member of our men's basketball team," UB said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with its investigation. Until we learn more from police, we won't have further comment."
