To shovel or not to shovel, that is the question

Winter weather is here and with it comes the ageless debate: Is it better to shovel or use a snowblower?

Guess what?

There is no definitive answer, it call comes down to personal preference.

The debate takes on more importance (okay, maybe not) with some parts of the region seeing at least four inches of new snow and 35 mph winds landing overnight and more snow is coming.

A very informal and extremely unscientific poll taken at the Coffee & Stone Cafe in North Tonawanda found a split among its patrons.

Many said, if it is less than four or six inches, they shovel.

Anything beyond that and it is snowblowing all the way.

"If it is less than four inches, I left God take it away," said Joseph Chia of North Tonawanda.

But, Chia does favor snowblowing.

"It makes my wife happy," he said.

Pendleton resident Jim Bogdan said shoveling is the way to go.

Bogdan said he does it as part of his winter time work out regime.

"I like doing it, it makes me feel good," Bogdan said.

North Tonawanda's Earl Huntington is more diplomatic. He shovels and uses a snowblower if there is more than six inches of fresh snow on the ground.

"I know a lot of people at my age (73), who don't shovel and they should," Huntington said.
