Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Here comes some much needed rain!
"It's been a month since we had anything significant," National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Hamilton tells WBEN early Monday.
The rain will come in two waves, beginning with a period of soaking rain Monday, then a period of drier weather before another swath of rain approaches the region later Tuesday unto Wednesday, says Hamilton.
The rain is indeed needed agriculturally and Hamilton says we should get about a half inch of rainfall today and an additional half inch in the secound round of rain beginning later Tuesday.
The region will soak up the rainfall like a sponge, Hamilton says. "I wouldn't expect the local tributaries to show hardly any response from this," he says. "The ground will soak this up pretty easily."
The rain will also ensure better air quality across the Buffalo- Niagara region, says Hamilton. "It's not going to be an issue for a while."
"Even though this event may not completely put out the (Canadian) fires, any increase in precipitation or even just the humidity could make a substantial difference in helping to end the persistent blazes," explained AccuWeather Meteorologist La Troy Thornton.
The cold front will allow fresher, largely smoke-free air to sweep across the northern U.S. early this week.
