Severe weather threat followed by wet, cooler conditions

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - An approaching front and some brief but balmy temperatures are combining to provide the threat for some severe weather across parts of Western New York Wednesday.

The threat of severe weather is most probable during the afternoon hours as the atmosphere will be heated, but Lakes Erie and Ontario may well provide a ring of protection across the metro Buffalo area.

National Weather Service forecasters in Buffalo say strong winds across the lakes and their seasonably cool waters will help stabilize the more populated portion of the region. "This will greatly lower the risk for convection in these areas northeast of the lakes, including Buffalo, Rochester, and Watertown."

Following the Wednesday active weather pattern, temperatures are expected to be unseasonably cool as the Memorial Day weekend approaches. A wet Friday into Saturday is also in the forecast before temperatures and conditions struggle to rebound through the remainder of the weekend.

"It won`t be until the start of the new week that we will even begin to approach normal values for high temperatures as generally dry conditions look set to resume/persist across the Great Lakes," NOAA forecasters say.
