A 'slushy sleet-filled mess' overnight with lingering snow early Saturday

"Not too much additional accumulation."

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It may not be a meteorological phrase, but National Weather Service meteorologist Kirk Apfel described the anticipated storm system that arrived late Friday and overnight as, "A slushy, sleet-filled mess."

Seems about right as roads are mainly wet with a curb of slushy mess in spots and only an accumulation of a few inches on the ground across many locations across the Buffalo and Western New York region.

"Amounts varied widely," Apfel tells WBEN early Saturday with about an inch on the ground at the airport weather station before daybreak. Some areas of Genesee, Wyoming and parts of Niagara and Orleans counties saw as much as 4 inches of wet, heavy snow. "Most came in on the low sides of the projections," Apfel tells us.

As expected, mixed precipitation held down accumulation amounts but contributed to the 'messy' aspect of the storm system. "A lot of areas got a lot of sleet with this," Apfel says and the further south you go across the metro area, the lesser the accumulation.

So, now what?

"Not too much additional accumulation," Saturday says Apfel, as the storm system exits the region. "Lingering light snow this morning," he says with accumulations generally about an inch or so across most of the area.
