Warming trend with fair amount of sunshine in midweek forecast

"A fair amount of sunshine, with highs by Wednesday probably reaching 50 degrees"

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After a weekend reminder that it is still winter in Western New York, a midweek warmup is in store and there will be plenty of sunshine to go along with it.

"Tuesday and Wednesday both look dry," National Weather Service meteorologist Kirk Apfel tells WBEN. "A fair amount of sunshine, with highs by Wednesday probably reaching 50 degrees."

Seasonal snow totals so far for the winter are behind across the region, despite the two major lake effect storms that pummeled parts of the Western New York area. "We got 59 inches measured here at the airport so far, which is about 14 inches below normal," Apfel says. "Some of the snow belts, southtowns and ski country are probably running several feet below normal."

With Lake Erie ice-free, the potential for lake effect snow does remain a threat across the region through the remaining weeks of winter. But the likelihood is somewhat diminished, Apfel notes. "As the sun angles gets higher and stronger, it tends to disrupt the bands during the daylight hours at least, so it's a little more difficult to get lake effect, but it's possible if the lake is open."

Don't get too comfortable with the spring-like temperatures midweek, as a more active weather pattern will bring the chance of rain, snow and even lake effect snow late week and into the weekend.
