(WWJ) – Remember this guy?
The World's Largest Rubber Duck is again making a splash in the Great Lakes, but this time in Detroit. You may recall the giant yellow floating spectacle made a stop in Buffalo in August 2016.
Some majestic tall ships are set to grace the shores of the Great Lakes in Northern Michigan this summer during the Festival of Sail.
There will also be a giant yellow presence floating alongside some of those ships – the World’s Largest Rubber Duck.”
Her name is Mama Duck and she's 61 feet high, 69 feet wide and 79 feet long, weighing in at a little over 30,000 lbs.
Mama Duck will be making two appearances in Michigan this summer when the Festival of Sail visits Alpena along the shores of Lake Huron July 15-17 at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center waterfront.
Later in the summer, Mama Duck and the ships will drop anchor at Marquette’s Mattison Lower Harbor Park on Lake Superior, Aug. 12-14.
Craig Samborski, president and owner of the World’s Largest Rubber Duck – yes, that’s his real title – joined WWJ’s Erin Vee to give all the details on the festival and just how Mama Duck came to be.
The Festival of Sail will feature three days of live entertainment, food and beverages, and a chance to not only see the novelty duck, but a glimpse inside “some of the grandest ships of yore.”
Some of the ships include the Nao Trinidad from Spain and the Pride of Baltimore II – which is a replica of a typical Baltimore clipper that set sail in the early 1800s – and the U.S.S. Brig Niagara, a 118-foot-tall model of the American ships from the War of 1812.
Tickets are available online – Alpena / Marquette.
