Jennifer Lopez turned heads, raised eyebrows and got a slew of accolades for her performance in the 2019 film “Hustlers.”
After she picked up Golden Globes, SAG, Critic’s Choice and Independent Spirit Award nominations, many expected Lopez would be a shoo-in for an Academy Award nod. But when her name was absent from the list of Best Supporting Actress nominees, the Oscar snub became very real.
Now a year after the trophies were handed out, the 51-year-old is reflecting on the impact not being recognized by the Academy had on her.
"I was talking about this the other day. [My production partner] Elaine [Goldsmith-Thomas] made a post where she listed all the things I had been nominated for and won that season," Lopez told Allure. "And when it came to the Oscars, it was so obviously absent. It was a sting."
The “Waiting for Tonight” singer questioned the deeper meaning of having the performance overlooked by the industry’s highest honor.
"I was like, 'Okay, when you're supposedly in everybody else's mind supposed to be nominated and you're not, what does that mean? Is it really real? Are the other ones real and this one isn't?'" she added. "It came to a point where I was like, 'This is not why I do this. I don't do this to have 10 Oscars sitting on my mantel or 20 Grammys.'"
“The point is creating and the joy that I get from the things I get to put out in the world that entertain and inspire and empower people,” Lopez said. “I think my life is about more than awards.”
While she may not have an Oscar yet, Lopez also reminisced about getting to absolutely kill it during last year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show alongside fellow Latina superstar Shakira.
"The Super Bowl was really about showing what I could do to a bigger, broader audience than ever," she told the outlet.
“The idea was to show the best of, not just myself as an artist, but the best of women, the best of Latinos. I felt that I represented Latinos, I represented women, and I represented people in my age group in a light that was very positive and strong.”
J.Lo will next appear in the musical romcom “Marry Me” alongside Owen Wilson and singer Maluma. The film was set to be released in theaters in May and has since been postponed until February 11, 2022.
Later this month, the 51-year-old will begin production on the action comedy “Shotgun Wedding” with Josh Duhamel.
