NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- It was supposed to be a peaceful departure. Instead, it’s become a chaotic crisis.
Over the last two weeks, the whole world has watched as the Taliban have taken charge of Afghanistan despite the presence of U.S. troops in the region for the past two decades.

While few could have seen these events coming, award-winning international journalist Robin Wright says, “This is, after 20 years and over a trillion dollars, a signal of the inability of the United States to read the situation on the ground.”
She adds, "All the military of the world, or the arsenal of a nation, often is not enough to counter an ideology that has a strong following.”

In this week’s 880 IN DEPTH Podcast, we analyze the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. Not only do we explore how it all began, but we hear how former veterans, who previously served in Afghanistan, feel about the conflict, and examine why it should matter to all Americans.
Despite the destruction, Wright says that the 20 years overseas weren’t entirely wasted. She says, “We did achieve some things,” including the education of girls, the country’s first democratic elections, and the creation of an independent media.

In addition to Wright, we also speak to retired Army Col. Jeff Cantor.
He wants the public to know, “This is absolutely not a military failure. The military did its job...our troops did their job and did it well and did it with honor.”
Now, with thousands more new troops deployed in an effort to keep the peace, it’s unclear if (or when) the conflict will end.
Cantor claims, “This was a policy failure,” and, “when you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
