NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Brian Laundrie’s parents are requesting ownership of the notebook that was found near his remains in a Florida swamp last fall, their attorney said.
The FBI has been in possession of the notebook since it was discovered near Laundrie’s skeletal remains in a Sarasota County nature park in October. The agency is still investigating the killing of his fiancée, Long Island native Gabby Petito.
Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino told NewsNation reporter Brian Entin on Tuesday that they’re looking to take possession of the notebook as “part of a formal proceeding to administer Brian's estate.”
Bertolino also revealed that Gabby Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, “filed to obtain Gabby’s belongings that are in the Laundrie home or in police custody.”
Bertolino said he and Petito/Schmidt family attorney Rick Stafford “are trying to work this out cordially.”
In November, officials announced that Laundrie, 23, had shot himself in the head. His remains were discovered in a previously flooded area of Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on Oct. 20.
Petito’s remains were found on Sept. 19 in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping area near Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. Authorities said the 22-year-old had been strangled to death.
Laundrie was listed as a “person of interest” in Petito's killing, but he was charged only with fraudulent use of a debit card that was not his.
Police in North Port, Florida, have previously said Laundrie’s notebook “may be salvageable,” and crime experts believe it could shed light on what happened to Petito on the couple’s cross-country van trip.
