In the wake of the recent events in Afghanistan, members of Congress have vowed to investigate what went wrong with the United States' removal of troops from the country and how the current chaos could have been avoided in a hearing next week.

Southern California Congressman Adam Schiff said he's been horrified by the footage coming out of the country over the last few days.

"To watch these Afghans clinging to aircraft and trying to get through perimeters where there are Taliban checkpoints, we still have thousands and thousands of Americans in Afghanistan who want to be evacuated," Schiff told KCBS Radio's Rebecca Corral on Wednesday.

"We want to look at how prepared or unprepared we were for this rapid collapse of the Afghan government and why these evacuations didn’t begin sooner," he said.

The hearing will also go over what intelligence the U.S. government had about what was going internally in the Afghan government over the last several months. According to Schiff, what information he received was quite dire, but "nothing I recall as dramatic as a one-week collapse," he said.

It’s likely the share of responsibility will fall on multiple parties, he said.

"It isn’t just the intelligence," said Schiff. "It's whether people act on the intelligence we have, it's whether we took prudent precautions for worst-case scenarios."
