PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The CDC has given approval for COVID-19 vaccine boosters for all. People could start getting the boosters as early as this weekend.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted 11-0 to recommend expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots to everyone 18 and older who is at least six months out from their previous shot. The CDC director gave final approval to that move.

The committee also voted unanimously to recommend every adult over the age of 50 get a booster.

Panel members heard safety data that found concerns about adverse effects from boosters have been unfounded.

Typical reactions are pain at the injection site, headache and fatigue.

While experts say immunity may wane months after the second dose, the vaccines continue to be very effective at limiting severe disease or death.

The move came hours after the FDA gave the okay to requests from Moderna and Pfizer to open booster to all adults.

Supporters of the move say current booster rules and recommendations are confusing, and this will make them easier to understand.

But others say the focus should be on getting more people their first shot, rather than giving out boosters.
