BUFFALO (WBEN) - We don't exactly know when life will to return to normal.
That's an unnerving thought for all of us, but it may be especially worrisome for high school seniors who thought they had firm plans for the next step of their educational futures.
"What I'm also hearing now is more and more students who are so uncertain on whether they'll be able to go away to school or whether that's not going to happen, potentially taking that gap year and saying, 'Look, my heart was set on going to this school, going away, dorming...I'll go back in the following fall," he said.
He added that there may even be increased pressure on students who are traveling far to school, as their may be disruptions in travel and dorming situations as colleges and universities try to figure out their next course of action.
"The group that may actually be experiencing a change to their plans or having a new type of difficulty would be our high school juniors," said Charland. "The reason for that is that spring is a busy time for college visitation with families planning weekends to hit up a couple of different universities at one time. It's also the time that students will register to take the ACT or the SAT.
"There may come a time down the line where a student has enrolled in one of the harder hit areas, say for example that a student had decided that they wanted to further study in a place like New York City," Charland continued. "That student may decide down the line that they may not want to do so for personal reasons, but for right now, so many students take advantage of our local SUNY system and local SUNY schools, but that remains pretty consistent at this time."
"The admissions departments are very much open and communicating, a lot of them are reaching out to students - talk to the admissions people at the college that you're considering," he said. "See where they stand, if they have any plans and what their form of communication back to you is."
