As the beginning of the school year approaches, now is the time to help your child develop good habits that will ensure they do their best in school.

Some officials are referring to this as 'optimizing' a child’s brain.

Start with study habits.

"When you’re doing any studying you should be listening to something like classical music," Patrick Porter, the founder of BrainTap Technologies, told KCBS Radio. "We call it the Mozart effect. It actually has been proven that anyone who is listening to that kind of music just becomes smarter."

And just as you would your garden, water your kid.

"Make sure that they’re hydrated. They should be drinking half their body weight in ounces of water per day," the Porter advised. "That doesn’t include any sodas or anything else they might drink. Water is needed because the brain is a hydro-engine."

Low glycemic food like strawberries or blueberries are great for your child’s brain as well as good fats such as walnuts and avocados. However, most important of all is sleep.

"Prepare them to sleep two hours before bedtime," Porter said. "Start turning the lights off in the house, start doing calming exercises or watch things that are only going to calm them down."

Lastly, breathing exercises are not only a good way to fall asleep, but can also teach our children how to regulate their brains, something they can use when they’re feeling anxious or stressed. Inhale to the count of four then exhale to the count of eight. This slows things down and helps them come into balance.
