GLEN COVE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — The former manager of a Long Island, New York ice cream shop claims he was fired after refusing to serve a maskless customer who was coughing inside the store, but his ex-boss is telling a different story.
Thomas DeSarle worked for Carvel in Glen Cove as a manager for two years up until this month when he found himself out of a job following an encounter with the unmasked patron.
DeSarle said when the customer first walked into the shop without a mask on, he tried to hand the man one.
He claims the customer refused to put the mask on and then DeSarle said the man started coughing.
"He actually tried to hand me a soaking wet bill that came out of his pocket and I refused to serve him and I was told that if I'm too scared to serve customers that I no longer have to work here and I was released," DeSarle said.
He claims for the past month he was told by the owner to serve customers not wearing masks because the store was losing too much money.
"My boss has been allowing customers in the store for probably like the last three to four weeks without masks now because there's been too many fights in the store back and forth between customers and he's losing too much business because of it," DeSarle said.
The owner told Hall that DeSarle walked out and never showed up to his scheduled shifts the next week. The owner said DeSarle was never fired.
DeSarle said after posting his story on social media he has received a number of job offers.
