PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Long COVID is largely a mystery, despite numerous studies into the effects of lingering symptoms of COVID-19. Ongoing research has given doctors some insight into the effects on children.
In the early days of the pandemic, it became clear that most children could withstand the impacts of the virus on their bodies which were so devastating to older people. Many kids experienced minor symptoms, and some seemed to express none at all.
Most of the early attempts to get kids to wear masks or make the switch to remote learning were designed to protect them — and also to help stem the spread to others in higher risk groups.
Long COVID symptoms vary widely and include fatigue, shortness of breath, brain fog and a general malaise that lasts some 12 weeks after initial infection. There are a growing number of children who exhibit these symptoms.
Relatively few studies of children under 11 years old are being performed, and the number of children exposed continues to grow.
