It’s the war of the roses!
An online petition wants first lady Jill Biden to undo former first lady Melania Trump’s White House Rose Garden renovations, reported Business Insider.
More than 47,000 people (and counting) have signed on to the Change.org petition which asks Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff to reverse the former first lady’s 2020 update to the Rose Garden.
Back in August, Melania unveiled her redesign which was intended to “fulfill the dynamic needs of the modern presidency,” but many felt it was left devoid of the lush and colorful display of flowers made famous by Jackie Kennedy in 1962.
“In 2019, Melania Trump had the cherry trees, a gift from Japan, removed as well as the rest of the foliage and replaced with a boring tribute to herself,” the petition reads.
“Jackie's legacy was ripped away from Americans who remembered all that the Kennedy's meant to us. We want Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff to take this on and restore the Rose Garden to Jackie's original design.”
Many of the individuals who signed on to the petition also left comments expressing their disdain for Melania's makeover.
“Bring back the beauty of the roses, flowering trees, tulips, etc. Erase the ugly,” wrote one petitioner.
“The White House Rose Garden was an iconic symbol in its own right and needs to be restored. Beautiful flowers & foliage bring joy and we need that joy back,” added another.
“Restore US tradition!!!” commented a third.
According to ABC News, Melania did have 10 crabapple trees removed from the garden, but they were expected to be replanted elsewhere on the White House grounds.
Neither the former first lady, nor the current first lady have publicly commented on the petition.
