"He did it! 60 miles on a bike + a transition run!" Chasten Buttigieg wrote, tagging the photo's location as Mission Point Lighthouse, located near his hometown of Traverse City.
The response from the Internet was just as enthusiastic -- albeit focused more on the 39-year-old former South Bend, Indiana mayor's physique than his athletic prowess.
"Happy Sunday here’s a thirst trap of the Secretary of Transportation!" tweeted Democratic strategist Tim Hogan, along with the photo.
Photographer Michael Epps tweeted, "I've been curious to know what Pete looked like, underneath those blue suits for a while now, and this 'thirst trap' does not disappoint. Thanks Chasten.
Wrote another Twitter user: "Chasten really opened instagram today and said to himself 'let's be bad, let's order some fries for the table'
Wrote another: "Chasten is so lucky."
Other users reminded others of his position: "Why not take the bus? You are the Secretary of Transportation. Lead by example Peter."
"Was the bike in the back of a black SUV?" asked another.
Pete Buttigieg isn't the only lawmaker to have turned heads after being spotted shirtless in public, though.
Barack Obama was famously spotted shirtless vacationing in Hawaii in 2008. And TMZ in 2012 also released a shirtless photo of former House Speaker Paul Ryan on vacation in Oklahoma taken about 6 years prior.
