SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Penning reviews for wine or craft beer can be an art.

But most things can be dpulicated in the world of artificial intelligence.

A group of researchers has created an AI algorithm capable of writing reviews for wine and beer, according to Scientific American. The reviews are said to be "largely indistinguishable from those penned by a human critic."

The research – released in the International Journal of Research in Marketing – claims "that machines are capable of performing the critical marketing task of writing expert reviews directly from a fairly small amount of product attribute data (metadata)."

"Wine reviews are a nice data set from the point of view of a computer scientist," Daniel Rockmore, professor of math and computer science at Dartmouth College and author of the research, told KCBS Radio's Megan Goldsby. "They have a particular kind of form…characteristics like the kind of wine, where the vineyard was, what kind of rating it got."

It's not thought the tech will take jobs from human reviewers.

"I actually don't see it as a replacement (for humans)," Rockmore said. "I do see it as an assistant. You know, wine reviewers have to drink a lot of wine. I suppose they might be in various states of coherence to write the review. The machine gives them a good start."

But can it be done without actually tasting the wine itself? That remains to be seen.
