A Mississippi third grader was forced to remove her mask at school claiming it went against school policy. The mask had the words “Jesus Loves Me” written on it.
The group Alliance Defending Freedom has filed a federal lawsuit on the family’s behalf citing that the little girl is being denied her First Amendment rights to free speech.
Lydia Booth, 9, told her parents that she wants to be a missionary and that’s why she wears the mask, according to the lead attorney in the case Tyson Langhofer.
“Public schools have a duty to respect the free expression of students that the First Amendment guarantees to them,” ADF attorney Michael Ross told The New York Post.
“Other students within the school district have freely worn masks with the logos of local sports teams or even the words ‘Black Lives Matter.’ This student deserves an equal opportunity to peacefully express her beliefs,” Ross added.
