A woman surfing near The Pit area of Morro Strand State Beach found the victim face down in the water at approximately 10:40 a.m. and brought him to the beach, the paper reported.

The attack prompted officials to bar people from going into the water at beaches in the Morro Bay and State Parks area on Saturday.

Multiple local agencies responded to the attack, however the man was pronounced dead upon arrival with no possibility of resuscitation.

The 31-year-old victim’s identity remains withheld. Authorities told the outlet they found his car in the parking lot on the south side of Morro Creek.

A police spokesperson added that it was "definitely, clearly a shark attack," likely involving a great white, though there were no witnesses.
