Primary and runoff elections in the U.S. continue as we heard towards the November midterm elections, including races in multiple states Tuesday.

These races include a primary in Virginia and primaries in Washington D.C. as well as runoff elections in Alabama and Georgia. Ballotpedia has identified the Republican U.S. Senate primary runoff as a main “battleground” race.

Katie Britt, who serves as president and CEO of Alabama’s business council, is running against U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, who currently represents Alabama’s 5th congressional district, in the Senate primary runoff race. Runoffs are held when candidates are within certain percentages of each other in 10 U.S. states.

Brooks – a graduate of Duke University and the University of Alabama Law School who has worked as a prosecutor and district attorney – has been in Congress since the 1980s. Britt has experience in several positions for U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, including chief of staff, and as special assistant to University of Alabama President Robert Witt. She also is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law.

Although Brooks has supported former President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims about election fraud, the “kingmaker” has endorsed Britt.

In Alabama, a Republican primary runoff election for Brooks’ current Congressional district is also scheduled for Tuesday and Ballotpedia listed it as a battleground race as of election day. Pharmaceutical sales representative Dale Strong is running against Dr. E. Casey Wardynski, who served as assistant secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs under Trump. There will also be a Republican primary runoff for Alabama Secretary of State, with Wes Allen running against Jim Zeigler.

Virginia is holding a Republican primary for its 7th Congressional District election and Ballotpedia listed it as a battleground race Tuesday. Derrick Anderson, Gina Ciarcia. Bryce Reeves, David Ross, Crystal Vanuch and Yesli Vega are running in the election.

Other primary elections in Virginia include: District 2, with candidates Tommy Altman, Andy Baan, Jarome Bell and Jennifer Kiggans; District 3 with candidates Theodore Engquist and Terry Namkung and District 6 with incumbent Benjamin Lee and challenger Merritt Hale. Most Democratic primaries in Virginia were canceled, except for the District 8 primary. Incumbent Donald Sternoff Beyer Jr. is running against Victoria Virasingh.

In Georgia, there are runoff elections in multiple districts. Democrats Joyce Marie Griggs and Wade Herring are running against each other in the 1st Congressional District, Republicans Jeremy Hunt and Chris West are running against each other in the 2nd Congressional District, Republicans Jake Evans and Rich McCormick are running against each other in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, Republicans Michael Corbin and Mark Gonsalves in Georgia's 7th Congressional District, Democrats Jessica Fore and Tabitha Johnson-Green in the 10th Congressional District and Republicans Mike Collins and Vernon Jones in the 10th Congressional District.

Other Tuesday elections include the Democratic primary for U.S. House Non-Voting Delegate District of Columbia, the Republican primary for U.S. House Non-Voting Delegate District of Columbia and the primary for the D.C. House Shadow representative.

Non-voting delegates come from U.S. territories that are not states, such as Washington D.C. They are able to perform many of the other functions of a full representative, such as serving on committees, speaking on the U.S. House floor, introducing bills and offering amendments.

Incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton, Wendy Hamilton and Kelly Mikel Williams are running in the Tuesday Democratic primary. Nelson Rimensnyder is the only candidate in the Republican primary.

D.C. also has shadow congresspersons who cannot vote and work to push for the district’s statehood. Incumbent Oye Owolewa is running against Linda Gray in the Tuesday primary.

Apart from national elections Local elections were scheduled in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, D.C. and Georgia.
