NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has resigned from her position, making her the first member of President Trump's cabinet to do so.
"Our country experienced a traumatic and entirely avoidable event as supporters of the President stormed the Capitol building following a rally he addressed," Chao, 67, said in a statement Thursday. "As I'm sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside."
Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
On January 31, 2017, she was confirmed as the 18th U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
This is Chao's second cabinet position. She served as Secretary of Labor from 2001 to January 2009, and is the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to the President's cabinet in American history.
