Tornadoes tore through a number of areas in New Orleans and surrounding regions, causing extensive damage, power outages, and at least one death Tuesday night.

Over 16,000 residents in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and St. Tammany Parishes were left without power Tuesday night, according to numbers from electric companies in the region, Entergy and CLECO.

More than half of those power outages – over 8,000 – were in Orleans Parish.

Another 3,800 were without power in St. Bernard and nearly as many – about 3,500 – in Jefferson.

All three parishes are serviced by Entergy.

Meanwhile, over 1,000 CLECO customers in St. Tammany were also experiencing power outages.

Entergy’s crews continue to assess the damage, a company spokesperson told NOLA.com while declining to give any estimate on restoration times.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a statement Tuesday night, sharing that "the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness has activated the Emergency Operations Center in response to the tornado."

She continued, noting that "the Sanitation, Parks and Parkways and Public Works Departments will be on the ground at first light clearing right of ways and assessing damage to the neighborhoods impacted. Debris contractors have also been notified to stand ready to mobilize if needed."

The same weather system also spawned tornadoes across the region, causing multiple injuries and damages in Oklahoma and Texas. A woman was killed north of Dallas, reports the Associated Press.
