Her TikTok videos show her kids’ distinctive personalities and cute family moments, but the most attention-grabbing part of Dougherty’s account, which has amassed over 1.1 million followers, is the in-depth look at the logistics of having such a large family.
Dougherty has shared that she spends over $1,000 a week on food, goes to the grocery store at least three times a week, and her time lapse videos of making meals for her family are reminiscent of a line cook at a diner.
“We've had a lot of fun just sharing our story on TikTok,” Dougherty told Good Morning America, though the road to parenthood has not been easy for her and her husband, Joshua. After experiencing 11 miscarriages in the course of nine years, the couple decided to adopt.
They adopted their first child in 2011, and six days later found out that Dougherty was pregnant. Now, with four biological children and six adopted kids living under their roof, they have taken to social media to share what it's like to have such a large family.
While many of the videos show how the family handles things like travel and snacks (they have a daily charcuterie board), they also focus on a cause that is near and dear to them: adoption.
“I think there's just this part of our story that inspires others... You don't have to be perfect and you don't have to be a picture-perfect, cookie-cutter family. You can be amazing and just show up,” said Dougherty, noting that they hope to expand their family further.
“We are definitely going to adopt again. We're going to focus on teenagers, since they're the least likely to get adopted,” she shared.
