NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Extreme heat will blanket the New York City area on Thursday and Friday, with RealFeel temperatures forecast to soar into the 100s.
An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday for all of New York City, as well as parts of Long Island and much of the Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey and southern Connecticut. An Air Quality Alert is also in effect for much of the area through late Thursday.
The scorching temps will combine with humidity for a dangerous combination on Thursday. New York City has opened cooling centers across the five boroughs to help people looking to beat the heat. City pools will also be open until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
As heat descended on the city Wednesday, Notify NYC sent out an advisory to residents urging them to conserve energy to avoid overwhelming the power network.
"Due to the intense heat, all households and businesses should limit energy usage to prevent power outages," the advisory read. "Please limit the use of washers, dryers, air conditioners, & other energy-intensive equipment, and turn off lights/televisions when not needed."
Con Edison said it is ready to respond to any service outages that may occur from increased demand and possible thunderstorms that could down power lines. Public Service Electric & Gas is also ready to respond to any service interruptions in New Jersey.
At a morning briefing, Mayor Bill de Blasio urged New Yorkers to help protect the electrical supply. He said energy would be reduced at city buildings and that New Yorkers should do the same.
“We want to tell everyone if you don’t need to use something today—if you don’t need to do your laundry, if you don’t need to use your microwave, if you don’t need to use air conditioning or a lot of lights—turn off anything you don’t need,” the mayor said. “Help us get through today, tomorrow, and then I think after that things are going to be looking a lot better.”
The high will crank up to 94 in the city on Thursday afternoon, but the RealFeels may reach 105 or better, according to AccuWeather. Inland suburbs could reach temperatures of 100 degrees, with RealFeels potentially nearing 110.
A late-day or evening thunderstorm can’t be ruled out before another oppressively warm night. The low will be 79.

It’s still very hot and sticky on Friday, when the high will be 94 degrees. RealFeels could again reach 105 in the afternoon.
A heavy thunderstorm will move in late in the day or at night Friday, helping to usher in some relief from the heat.

Saturday is not as hot but still humid with more clouds than sun and a couple of thunderstorms. The high will be 88.
Conditions will dry out and be much less humid for a beautiful Sunday, when highs will be in the low 80s.
