Tommy DeVito was a big part of the NHL Stadium Series festivities over the weekend, filming multiple TV spots to capture the essence of New Jersey, while being in attendance and receiving a loud ovation at Sunday afternoon’s game between the Rangers and Islanders.
Evan wonders if DeVito mania has reached levels of overkill, given the fact that he only made a few starts for the Giants in what turned out to be a lost season.
“Tommy DeVito was like Bruce Springsteen,” Evan said. “He was like the MC of the weekend. He recorded the intro…Saquon Barkley is from Jersey. Tiki Barber is from Jersey.
“At the end of the day, I like Tommy and thought he deserved a fair shot, but he’s a backup quarterback. He was treated like the conquering hero. I’m just curious, are you not sick of him? He didn’t even start at the end of the year! He was benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor.”
DeVito was the talk of the town for a month after bursting onto the scene as Big Blue’s starting quarterback when Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor went down with injuries, and was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season in New York football. But Evan wonders if DeVito still has the same adoration from fans now that the flash in the pan, at least on the field, seems to have died down.
“I like Tommy DeVito and I really appreciate everything he’s taken advantage of over the last few months,” Evan said. “To me, Saturday and Sunday was that jump-the-shark moment. It was the moment of, ‘What are we doing now?’”
