Anthony Volpe didn’t get into the hit column during his hyped big-league debut, but that didn’t stop the 21-year-old from having the time of his life in the Bronx on Thursday.
“It was probably the most fun day of my entire life,” Volpe told reporters after the Yankees’ 5-0 win over the Giants.
Volpe drew a walk in his first at-bat, then grounded out and struck out in an 0-for-2 day that also included a nifty putout on a slow grounder in the field, and a stolen base on his first ever attempt. His Yankees tenure began with a rousing ovation from the crowd when he was introduced during the opening festivities, and saluted the bleacher creatures by kissing the interlocking NY on his chest during his first-ever roll call.
“The whole pregame festivities, I probably had goosebumps the whole day,” Volpe said. “Just to be out there and get welcomed by the fans the way I did, and being able to go out there and just play. That was probably the best part.”
Volpe’s debut also earned a glowing review from his manager, who loved what he saw from the team’s top prospect in his Yankee debut.
“First AB, he gets the big walk, steals a base, handled the routine plays in the field, turned a double play, had the right at-bats,” Aaron Boone said. “Even the punchout…he’s having the right at-bat. He’s seeing the ball. He’s not anxious. I thought he was terrific. I thought he was really good.”
