Brian Cashman spoke with reporters on Wednesday, and he offered a plea: don’t quit on the 2023 Yankees.

“Don’t give up on us, that’s all I can tell you,” Cashman said. “Don’t count us out. Don’t give up on us. We got a good group of people player wise, staff wise…this is a championship-caliber operation from that perspective, but we’re not currently flying at the level we would have expected, because we’re missing some really important pieces, which I think anyone would acknowledge. At the same time, it’s also part of it, and you have to withstand it. we have to tread some water at the very least and not slide too far out of it.”

Cashman pointed to the plethora of injuries that have hit the Yankees when discussing the team’s .500 performance and big deficit in the AL East, and how the early-season tendencies of the sport make it difficult to add external reinforcements, especially with the trade deadline still nearly three months away.

“Myself and our staff are constantly looking to see what's available,” Cashman said. “Time of year is tough. April, May June…you don’t want to get wrecked with injuries early, because going outside the organization to deal with that is tough in today’s game.”

Still, the prospect pool and depth pieces that Cashman assembled hasn’t been nearly good enough in filling in for the Yankees, and Cashman and company can only hope the current roster can stay within striking distance until reinforcements arrive.

“In the position we’re in, we got to be thankful we’re in a long season, because we’re banged up so bad right now,” Cashman said. “If it was a short season, we’d be taken out. But we have time to make up ground.

“The silver lining is at some point, we'll be getting each of these individuals mostly back. We already know about the ones we won’t get back…but most cases, we’re gonna get these guys back. The difficulty is waiting for it.”
