Yankees reliever Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the rest of the 2023 season under Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
The 31-year-old righty had tossed 32.2 innings this season, posting a 3.86 ERA as part of a Yankee bullpen that has posted some of the best collective numbers in baseball this year. In his last outing, he allowed three runs in two innings of work against the Cardinals on Sunday.
Major League Baseball announced the news on Wednesday afternoon, and said the punishment was handed down following an investigation, and was accepted by Cordero.
Cordero’s suspension will also include the postseason, should the Yankees make it that far.
As part of the league’s policy, Cordero will also participate in an “evaluation and treatment program.”
The Yankees have had a pitcher suspended under the league’s domestic violence policy in the past, as Domingo German was suspended for 81 games after being placed on administrative leave back in 2019 after an alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend at a teammate’s charity event. Former Yankee reliever Aroldis Chapman was acquired from the Reds just before he was suspended for 30 games under the league's new domestic violence policy.
"The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero," the Yankees said in a statement. "There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy."
