It's the day anglers have been waiting for for months.

The annual Governor's Fishing Opener wrapped up in Albert Lea Saturday morning -- the southern-most site in the event's 72-year history.

It's the first Fishing Opener for Tim Walz, who was joined by several legislative leaders on a pontoon on Fountain Lake.

Great to join @GovTimWalz @paulgazelka @melissahortman & Sen. Bakk for another successful fishing opener. Thanks @cityofalbertlea & @PeggyABennett for your hospitality! #mnleg #MNGFO2019 pic.twitter.com/XZ4H83KEXL

They caught 13 fish, but no official tally for each member, including Walz. He said he had a great morning.

"Really fun," he said. "I really appreciate everyone coming down to Albert Lea. There were a lot of long trips for some of these folks, but it was really worth it."

Walz said they didn't discuss the budget or politics while out on the water. That will have to wait for Sunday as lawmakers try to pass a budget on time before the May 20 session deadline.

The 2020 Governor's Fishing Opener takes place May 7-10 in Otter Tail County.

Event headquarters for next year take place at Thumper Pond Resort, located on the eastern shore of Otter Tail Lake.
