On Friday January 4, Ray Hudson from Bloomington joined a unique club. He became the newest member of the “100-gallon club”, meaning he’s donated 100-gallons of blood in his lifetime.
“Ray is only one of five donors to reach this amazing milestone,” said Kathy Geist, Senior Executive Director for Memorial Blood Centers (MBC). “It’s fitting we honor him in January, during National Blood Donor Month. We could use more donors like Ray.”
Since 1970, Hudson has been donating blood to ensure a stable supply of blood is available in area hospitals. He donates platelets as often as 24 times a year and explained why.
“I was aware that something flowing freely in me was valuable to someone else,” said Hudson.
According to MBC Hudson knows firsthand the importance of donating blood. His wife Nancy Hudson said she’s a grandmother today because of blood donations.
“My husband is a giver and I’m a taker,” said Nancy. “My life has been saved four different times by blood donors.”
MBC is currently in need all blood donors and blood types, especially type O negative. You can schedule an appointment online at MBC.org or by calling 1-888-GIVE-BLD (1-888-448-3253). MBC says donors in January will receive a voucher for a free coffee at participating Dunkin’ locations.
