In honor of the new Vikings Exhibit at the Swedish Institute, running through October 27, I thought it would be fun to put together a top Viking recipes, non-football related. Is this the Memorial Day you bring ancient Viking foods to the pot-luck? I mean, you only live once people.
Plank FishWhat if you pegged some rainbow trout to a cedar board and cooked it like that? That my friends would be plank-fish, and I truly think it’s worth clicking through to consider, though maybe it’s a bit of a theatrical way of cooking.
Viking LambPretty straight forward, first you get a leg of lamb, then you dig a large cooking pit, fill it with rocks, set a fire on top of the rocks and feed it till the rocks glow… couple more things.
Cauldron of Assorted Boiled ThingsSet up a cauldron over a campfire, and throw in some water, salt, whatever meat and green things you have, and cook. I’d put in nettles I guess, for tang!
Viking FlatbreadMake a rustic dough, flatten balls of it to cook on a griddle over the fire. Add butter. That’s my favorite Viking option!
Mead, or a Weird Hops-Free Spiced AleWhat did the Vikings drink? Near as anyone can tell mead, that alcohol made from honey, and also beer made with mead, and spices. Dogfish Head Brewery once made a beer that was designed to match archaeological residues scraped from Viking vessels.
Also, Minnesota’s own Olvalde, in Rollingstone Minnesota, makes a number of historically relevant Viking beers. I love what they do. Find out more about them here!
